Certain schools in the HelloSubs network, such as Denver Public Schools, require a Colorado issued Substitute Authorization or Professional Teaching Credential to qualify. This article provides guidance for meeting this requirement and becoming eligible for these types of roles!

✅ Types of Substitute Authorizations

The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) offers three main types:

• 1-Year Authorization
  Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.

• 3-Year Authorization
  Requires a bachelor’s degree or higher.

• 5-Year Authorization
  Requires current or expired teaching credentials.

📝 Step-by-Step: How to Apply

1. Create a COOL Account

Visit the Colorado Online Licensing (COOL) system:

2. Prepare Your Documents

Depending on the authorization, you'll need:

1. Proof of education (diploma or transcripts)
2. A valid form of ID
3. Fingerprint background check (see step 3)

3. Complete Fingerprinting

Schedule fingerprinting through one of CDE’s approved vendors:

1. IdentiGo
   
2. Colorado Fingerprinting
   

This fingerprint check is separate from your HelloSubs background check. Find more information here: https://ed.cde.state.co.us/cdeprof/fingerprints.

4. Submit Your Application

Log in to your COOL account and complete the application. You’ll pay a fee (typically around $50–$90, depending on the type).

5. Wait for Approval

Applications are usually processed within 6–8 weeks. You will get an email once your authorization is issued.
